Beauty in the Balearics

For most of my life, visiting islands hasn’t held much appeal, perhaps related to my (un)healthy fear of water and quicksand (what’s up with that relic of growing up in the 70s/80s?). Anyway, spending a delightful two weeks on Vancouver Island three years ago gave me a new perspective. Now, visiting the Balearic Islands of Mallorca and Menorca has given me even more to appreciate

The key for me is being able to experience diverse natural environments and charming villages, venturing well beyond the tourist-filled beaches (ahem, Palma area). I also need to keep moving, whether hiking or exploring the towns and villages. Mallorca and Menorca offered so much lush and verdant terrain (abundant olive, citrus, apricot and carob trees), rugged mountains, beautiful coastlines and charming villages.

A five-mile hike in the S’Albufera des Grau natural park (part of a Unesco biosphere reserve) offered breathtaking views of the Balearic sea, cliffs, beaches, marshlands, spring flowers in bloom, and plenty of birds chirping in the more forested areas.

A special appearance by Mr. Tortoise, about halfway through the hike.

Although the natural beauty abounded in Mallorca and Menorca, there were also charming towns and villages. Below are a few images of the charming town of Valldemossa (Mallorca), which we got to explore during a light, misty rain, providing the perfect natural color saturation filter.

We made sure to try the signature Valldemossa treat, coca de patata, the lightest and airiest potato roll with a light dusting of powdered sugar.

I was especially taken with Ciutadella (Menorca), with its lovely old town, cobblestone streets, and most of all its rugged coastline with plenty of walking/biking trails that actually encircle the entirely of the island. I hope to someday return and bicycle the 115-mile perimeter of the island.
