Oooooo-urense! An underrated gem!

While staying a few days in Santiago de Compostela, the popular and final destination for folks who traverse the Camino, I decided it might be interesting to take the quick 30-minute high-speed train ride for a half day outing to Ourense.

I was primarily drawn to Ourense when I read about two beautiful and vastly different bridges over the Minho River.

First up, the Ponte Vella Bridge built in 1230 (!) and still serves as a pedestrian bridge.

The Ponte de Milenio (Millenium Bridge) was completed in 2001 after 28 months of construction and replaced an outdated bridge. Its ultra-modern design contrasts that of the Ponte Vella Bridge, just about a half mile away.

Fortunately, I didn't get in trouble for climbing over some fencing to get down close to the Minho River. Those of you who know me well, know that I have a hard time staying on designated trails and view them merely as a suggestion ;-)

The bottom of the Millenium Bridge reminded me of the underbelly of a huge fish.

And, while walking across the bridge, I found stairs to the top of two sections of the bridge. So, a bit reluctantly, I started climbing, and found that facing my fear of heights (especially when there's water down below) was worth the amazing view.

That's Ponte Vella Bridge off in the distance and viewed from atop the stairs of the Millenium Bridge. Interestingly, they say that the construction and design of the new Millenium Bridge caused a new pattern of white water down below, which is now used for recreation.

Ourense also had a lovely, historic old town and cobblestone streets, but what stood out for me were the green spaces alongside both sides of the river, the trails, and finally a nice dose of fall color. I'm really missing my New Mexico autumn experience, so I am thrilled when I find some bits of color here.
