Segovia-je por un día

A quick day trip to Segovia made for a quaint and scenic respite from the frenetic energy of the Madrid metro. Remnants of Semana Santa pilgrims were sill a-BUN-dant on this day after Easter, which was a good excuse to hike around these nearly empty trails beneath the town.

The trifecta of attractions in Segovia did not disappoint, starting with one of the best-preserved Roman aqueducts. Archaeologists believe it to have been constructed between 112-117 AD. It’s amazing that there’s no cement or mortar holding the 20,000+ stone blocks in place. And here I struggle building a simple cinderblock wall with cement, factory-produced block and other amenities of the 21st century.

Next up is the Gothic-style Segovia Cathedral, built in the mid-1500s. The cathedral features prominently off the main square and towers high above the nearby old city walls and escarpment.

Finally, we have the medieval castle, Alcázar de Segovia. Its long history includes time as a military fort, residence for monarchs, state prison, military school, and now for archives and museum. It also served as inspiration for the castle in Disney’s 1937 Snow White film.

In addition to the big three, my meandering around town allowed me to see the theater, quiet cobblestone streets, and some eye-catching candy apples (which would have been irresistible had I not just eaten a kilogram of freshly made Tortilla Española).
